What Rockstar actually said
Official, on the record. For three years Rockstar said nothing about how big GTA 6 is. No trailer, no Newswire post, no store listing carried a size claim — which is why this page used to tell you that the popular "twice the size of GTA 5" figure was pure community math. That changed on August 27, 2026, the day Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix.
As part of that press cycle, Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson sat down with YouTuber TGG, who published the figures directly:
"The map is twice the size of GTAV and three times that of the playable area of RDR2. The city itself is twice as big as Los Santos, but also, the built-up area outside Vice City is eleven times the built-up area outside of Los Santos in GTAV."
— Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, to TGG, August 27, 2026
The quote was picked up and corroborated the same week by PC Gamer, Kotaku and VGC. Separately, Nelson told The New York Times that his own recent playthrough ran about 80 hours — covered in our story length guide.
One distinction worth keeping straight: this is a Rockstar developer on the record in an interview, not something Rockstar has published. The official GTA VI site, the trailers and the Newswire still contain no size figure at all. That makes it official — it is the studio speaking — but it also means there is no document to check it against, and no map to measure.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — the official presentation on Rockstar Games' YouTube channel, following its Netflix premiere on August 27, 2026. Worth noting for this page: the video itself contains no size figures and never shows a map screen. The numbers came from the interviews around it, which is why they arrived as quotes rather than as something you can pause and measure.
The four numbers, separated
Nelson gave four comparisons in two sentences, and they get blended together constantly. They compare different things:
| The claim | What it actually compares | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ~2x | The whole Leonida map vs the whole GTA 5 map | Official |
| ~3x | The whole Leonida map vs the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2 | Official |
| ~2x | Vice City proper vs Los Santos proper | Official |
| ~11x | The built-up area outside Vice City vs the built-up area outside Los Santos | Official, but widely misquoted — see below |
| Any km² or sq-mi figure | — | Fan math. Rockstar has published none. |
Analysis. Note the qualifier in the Red Dead comparison: Nelson said three times the playable area of RDR2, not three times RDR2's map. Plenty of outlets dropped those two words, and they do real work — RDR2's map includes terrain that is visible or technically loaded but never freely playable. Comparing against the playable subset is a more conservative claim than the headline version suggests.
The 11x figure is being misread — and it matters
Analysis of an official quote. This is the number most likely to reach you in mangled form. Nelson's actual words were that "the built-up area outside Vice City is eleven times the built-up area outside of Los Santos." Several widely-copied write-ups rendered that instead as something close to "Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings" — and from there it mutated into social posts claiming GTA 6's map is eleven times bigger than GTA 5's.
It is not, and you can show that without any inside information. Run the arithmetic on the misreading:
- Nelson said the whole map is about 2x GTA 5's.
- Los Santos and its surroundings make up a large share of GTA 5's map.
- If Vice City and its surroundings were 11x that share, the Leonida map would have to be many times larger than GTA 5's — not twice.
The misreading contradicts the sentence it came from. The correct reading has no such problem, because built-up area is only a sliver of either map. Outside Los Santos, GTA 5's developed land amounted to Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay, Grapeseed and a scatter of roadside buildings — a small base. Eleven times a small base is still a modest fraction of a map that is twice the size overall.
The 11x figure is not a claim about how big Leonida is. It is a claim about how much of Leonida is built.
Read correctly, it is arguably the most interesting thing Nelson said. GTA 5's countryside was mostly empty: mountains, desert and highway between three small towns. The claim here is that the rest of Leonida is developed — that Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and the Keys contain real towns with real buildings rather than scenery between missions. That lines up with what the region list already implied and with the enterable-interior evidence in our interiors breakdown, and it is a far more meaningful statement about the game you will play than any total-area figure.
Why a ratio still is not a size
Analysis. Rockstar gave ratios. It did not give a measurement, and it has still never shown the in-game map screen. That gap is why the square-kilometre figures you find cannot be trusted: they are all produced by multiplying an approximate ratio by a disputed baseline.
The circulating estimates disagree with each other by more than a factor of two — roughly 83 km², about 125 km², about 160 km², and "over 200 km²" all appear in confident-sounding articles. They cannot all be correct, and none of them is Rockstar's.
Part of the problem is upstream. Even GTA 5's size has never had one agreed number: commonly cited community measurements put it anywhere from roughly 49 km² of land to around 81 km² once water is included. "Map size" itself is ambiguous — land area, water area and playable space give three different answers for the same game. Double an uncertain number and you inherit the uncertainty, then present it with a decimal point.
So the most precise honest statement available right now is the one Rockstar made: about twice GTA 5. Anything more exact is invention.
What the fan mapping projects got right
Credit where it is due. For years, community mapping projects lined up trailer frames, screenshots and real Florida geography to sketch a projected Leonida, and their working conclusion was roughly double GTA 5. Rockstar has now said the same thing. That is a genuinely good result for painstaking amateur work, and this page previously treated the figure with more suspicion than it deserved.
It was not a clean sweep, though. One prominent mapping project landed at 2.55x, and other estimates ran higher still — so the community produced a range that happened to contain the right answer, rather than a single vindicated number. The lesson is narrower than "the leakers were right": careful geometry from official footage got the order of magnitude, and everything expressed to two decimal places did not. Our official screenshots breakdown covers how much the confirmed media does and does not pin down.
The minimap, from the same interview
Credible report. The same TGG interview covered how you will navigate all that space, which is the closest thing to map-screen information Rockstar has offered. Per that interview, the minimap is not permanently on screen by default — it appears when you are driving or when a waypoint is set — and the settings menu includes a classic option that keeps it visible at all times, plus a compass option in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2 in place of the traditional radar.
Treat the finer details with caution. These specifics reach us through secondhand relays of the interview rather than a Rockstar document, and those relays already disagree on smaller points such as whether a 2D/3D toggle exists. We are labelling the basics as a credible report and the toggle as unconfirmed.
What has still not appeared anywhere is a full in-game map screen. That is precisely why nobody has measured Leonida yet.
What would confirm real numbers
- An official map reveal — an in-game map screenshot from Rockstar would let the community measure Leonida properly for the first time.
- A Newswire post with concrete figures. Rockstar has historically avoided spec-sheet marketing, so this is the least likely route.
- The preload footprint, tracked in our file size tracker — though install size is a weak proxy, since audio, video and texture data dominate modern game installs far more than terrain does.
- Launch on November 19, 2026, when players measure the real thing within hours.
Until then, the ratios are the ceiling of what is known. For the regions themselves, see our main Leonida map guide, the Vice City guide, the Leonida Keys guide and the Port Gellhorn guide; the locations tracker keeps the confirmed-versus-rumor line current, and the full Extended Look breakdown covers everything else Rockstar showed that day.
Frequently asked questions
- How big is the GTA 6 map?
- Rockstar has given ratios but never a measurement. On August 27, 2026, Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson said the Leonida map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos. No square mileage or in-game map screen has been published, so every square-kilometre figure circulating is fan math.
- Is the GTA 6 map really twice the size of GTA 5?
- Yes, according to Rockstar. Rob Nelson stated it directly in an interview with YouTuber TGG published August 27, 2026. That figure had been a community estimate for years before Rockstar confirmed it, and the community turned out to be close.
- Is the GTA 6 map 11 times bigger than GTA 5?
- No. That is a misreading of Nelson's quote. He said the built-up area outside Vice City is eleven times the built-up area outside of Los Santos in GTA 5. It is a claim about how developed the rest of the state is, not about total map size. The whole map is about twice GTA 5's.
- How many square kilometres is the GTA 6 map?
- There is no official figure. Community estimates range from roughly 83 square kilometres to over 200, which cannot all be right. Even GTA 5's baseline is disputed depending on whether water and non-playable terrain are counted, so Rockstar's ratios are more reliable than any number derived from them.
- Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
- Yes. Rob Nelson said Vice City is about twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos, and that the built-up area outside Vice City is about eleven times the equivalent area outside Los Santos.
Source note: the size comparisons on this page come from Rob Nelson of Rockstar North, speaking to TGG in an interview published August 27, 2026, and corroborated by PC Gamer, Kotaku and VGC. Rockstar has published no map dimensions, so all square-kilometre figures are labelled as community estimates. Minimap details from the same interview are labelled as a credible report. Updated September 13, 2026 to replace this page's earlier framing, which described the 2x figure as community math alone.
